Frequently Asked Questions

A: The Road Accident Fund (RAF) is a South African government entity that provides compulsory cover to all users of South African roads against injuries sustained or death arising from accidents involving motor vehicles.
A: While the RAF has faced significant financial challenges and has been described as technically insolvent, it continues to operate and process claims. The fund is backed by the South African government and funded through a fuel levy.
A: Yes, the RAF Amendment Act introduced a cap on certain claims, particularly for general damages (pain and suffering). However, claims for medical expenses and loss of income may still be assessed based on actual losses.
A: You generally have 3 years from the date of the accident if the negligent driver is identified, and 2 years if the negligent driver is not identified.
A: You can claim from the RAF if you were injured in a motor vehicle accident caused by the negligent driving of another vehicle (third party). Passengers are always eligible to claim. The driver of the vehicle at fault cannot claim unless they were also injured by another negligent driver.
A: No. The RAF only compensates for injuries caused by the negligent driving of another vehicle (a third party).
A: No. RoadCover appoints a panel of experienced attorneys to manage your RAF claim. You cannot have two sets of attorneys handling the same claim.
A: Yes. Your Personal Accident policy will pay out according to your chosen cover. RoadCover will assist you in claiming additional compensation from the RAF for medical expenses, loss of earnings, funeral costs, or loss of support, over and above your PA payout.

You may claim for:

Past and future hospital and medical expenses (uncapped)

Funeral expenses (up to R18,000)

Past and future loss of earnings limited to R368,035.00 (as at 2025 – adjusted annually) per annum up to your retirement age

Past and future loss of support for a dependent of a deceased victim (breadwinner) limited to R368,035.00 (as at 2025 – adjusted annually) per annum up to your retirement age

A: Pothole Assist will not replace the tyre. Pothole Assist will manage the claim for what the member has paid to replace the damaged tyre. The member will then get 100% of what the road agency has paid out for the claim
A: Pothole Assist will manage the member’s claim. The member will need to replace the damaged tyre or make the necessary repairs. Pothole Assist will then manage the claim for the member at Pothole Assist’s cost. This means that the member will be saved from the hassle of formulating the claim documents to the relevant road agency, as well as making follow ups to the road agency for feedback.
A: Unfortunately, no. The road agencies do not cover gravel roads.
A: The timing of the claim is totally dependent on the road agencies. Pothole Cover will forward the claims documents to the relevant road agencies after it is received and will constantly make the necessary follow-ups to try and get prompt feedback.

If you are unable to go back for a photo, you will need to give this feedback to Pothole Cover with the reason that no photo has been included with the claim. You will need to also give Pothole Cover the location of the pothole
A: Unfortunately, the road agencies do not reimburse for towing services.
